Freedom Ringing!

Or something.  It being MLK Day that title just kind of naturally popped up, but in terms of the actual day I will just refer back to this particular post.

And my husband did fix our bell, so that's ringing again, but that's not what this post is about, either.

No, this post is about actual rings.  Over a year ago my husband lost his wedding ring at the Y.  He's been borrowing one of mine ever since, and I've been wearing a new one.  Periodically I'll ask at the desk if a wedding band has turned up in Lost and Found, and the answer has always been no.  Seeing as the Y is closing soon, I figured I should check one last time.

And there was his ring!  There were two in Lost and Found, and as soon as they brought them out I recognized the one that I put on Ian's finger almost eighteen years ago.  When I showed it to him when he came up from the locker room he looked so happy!

I forgot how comfortable the ring was that I lent Ian, so I've been wearing it for a bit as something different.

Anyway, it's kind of amusing to me that having only ever been married to each other we now have enough wedding rings to pass down to all our children (plus the dog if he's feeling fancy).

It's kind of like cake pedestals in our house.  We somehow ended up with about half a dozen cake pedestals, only one of which is special (it was my grandma's and we only use it for birthdays), so we use them for everyday things because why not?  Pancakes or fishsticks look cooler on a glass cake pedestal, so that's just how we serve things and it's a habit.  But recently when we reorganized the kitchen and pulled lots of stuff out of the cabinets, Mona finally looked at me and said, "Why do we have so many of these things?"

And I laughed so hard, because, why do we have so many cake pedestals?  Most people don't have any!  How do they survive!?  We could serve dinner for each of us on a cake pedestal and still have one left over for, you know, a cake.  I might just do that next time we haven't run the dishwasher.

So I guess this post ended up being about cake pedestals.  (I tell you, they creep into everything around here.)  Welcome to my stream of consciousness blogging.  This apparently is what happens when I only have small windows of time to write and no time to craft anything.

Happy MLK Day!

  1. The thought of your family eating dinner off of cake pedestals made me laugh out loud! Please take a picture if you do that :)

    1. Maybe when Aden's at camp in a couple of weeks we can serve meals to Quinn and Mona like that to keep things interesting. (Because also washing more than two cake pedestals sounds annoying.)

    2. True! I bet they don't fit in the dishwasher! That does sound annoying ;)

  2. I was so sad to hear your Y was closing... As someone who's lost her exercise routine (for no apparent reason, really) I know what a bummer it is when you have something good going and now you need to find a replacement routine. That said, so happy that something good came out of it... Congrats on finding Ian's ring back :)

PS: We're a family without a cake pedestal. How do we survive? Hmmmm. I don't know... I'll have to think about it ;)

    1. You can have one of ours! We still have one in a box. It converts to a punch bowl, so it gets to be two things we don't use.
