Halloween 2016
I do like living in a neighborhood that has fun with Halloween. Tons of people out for trick-or-treat, the Pumpkin Pavilion event, and I don't think anyplace in the country has anything as cool as Zombie Hill. They outdid themselves this year:

Happy Halloween 2015!
Halloween was on Halloween here in Milwaukee! It's a Christmas miracle!
Unfortunately for the city-wide trick-or-treaters it rained here all day, but for our neighborhood's nighttime trick-or-treat it was merely cold and a bit damp. I was surprised at just how many people came to our door this year considering how unpleasant it was out, but we went through many hundreds of pieces of candy like we usually do. Lots of Ninja Turtles this year, along with many Batmen, Supermen, and Star Wars characters (the best of which was a dad dressed as Luke Skywalker with a baby in a Yoda hat strapped to his back). My favorites were a dad dressed as a cockroach, a little boy in a homemade tiger shark outfit, and a small child in a beautiful macaw costume. Oh, and a little girl in a homemade robot costume who said "Beep Boop!" for thank you
I got pictures of the kids in their costumes before they went to the Halloween dance at their school the day before while the weather was nice. I love how much they love to dress up!

The Recycled Kangaroo

The main thing I learned from that first kangaroo costume was that in subsequent costumes not to include feet. I didn't expect my kids to wear their costumes over multiple years (and for any and every occasion), but they do, and room for added leg growth has proven necessary.
So as much as Aden liked being a snowy owl last year, and a zebra the year before, she really liked her kangaroo costume from the year before that and decided to wear it again. It just needed a few alterations.

Halloween Costumes 2014!
Trick-or-Treat is tonight in our neighborhood, which at least does nighttime Trick-or-Treat. There will be Trick-or-Treat in the rest of Milwaukee in the daytime on Sunday. I have no idea if anything Halloween related is happening anywhere on Halloween.
But I got all the costumes done! Check out my kids as a pigeon, a snowy owl, and a tapejara:

Mona as a Tapejara
No, I didn't know what that was either. Definitely one of the most interesting parts of having kids is learning about things you wouldn't have been introduced to otherwise.
A tapejara is a specific kind of flying dinosaur. Mona was clear she didn't want to be any pterosaur, she wanted to be a tapejara. And she wanted to help!
I was apprehensive about working with Mona on her costume, not because she's not perfectly capable of making something on her own, but because we don't always communicate on an artistic level very well. She has her own ideas, and I have mine, and sometimes they mesh, and sometimes they don't. I'm happy to report it all went well and Mona is very happy with her costume!
I started with the basic jumpsuit where I traced around Mona on the fabric. The biggest challenge to my sewing costumes (aside from finding the time) is probably the dog. Chipper wants to lie on all the fabric all the time, and he doesn't like when I use the sewing machine. While I sew he begs to sit in my lap, trembling pathetically until I give in and then can't do anything.

Candy, Carmen, Cake, and Cancellations
Some days I think I do some pretty thoughtful writing here. Other times I use this space to dash off something that amuses me. Today is a messy hodgepodge of things I would like to write about better, but will be lucky if I simply get jotted down in the proper order so I don't forget all of it completely. Some weeks are like that.
This was the first year since we've lived in Bay View that we were able to make it to the Pumpkin Pavilion in our nearby park. Dozens and dozens of carved pumpkins lit at once, live bands, a magic show....
It was really fun, but we had to leave early because we wanted to also attend an art show downtown that a friend of ours had work in.
The show was very nice, but my husband and I were mostly taken by just how much activity there is on a Friday night in Milwaukee. We are more than a decade removed from, well, going anywhere that doesn't involve a bouncy house as a good time, and there were so many people out and about and doing things after dark. There were nighttime tours of some sort happening, horse-drawn carriages, people in costume (and not because of Halloween), a pedal tavern (a multi-person bike thing that is also a bar that I'm sure will get ticketed for open container violations if the cops can just catch it as it weaves its way through the city), and all manner of things going on. Ian and I vowed we will go out and be part of some of it one day.
We've had a lot of guests lately. My parents, brother, and a friend were here to attend a convention at the end of September, my mother-in-law was here for a week in mid-October and we threw a little birthday party for her, and then my parents, both brothers, my (future) sister-in-law, niece, and a dog came for several days. That last visit revolved around my mom's birthday, and both my brothers and my mom agreed to let my kids dress them up. Trick-or-Treat happens in our neighborhood for some reason on the Saturday evening before Halloween. (Don't ask. I think it's stupid not to have Trick-or-Treat on Halloween, but at least it's at night as it should be, as opposed to the rest of Milwaukee that does it in the daytime on Sunday afternoon.)
When I told my dad that my kids were going to be a kangaroo, a raccoon, and a skunk for Halloween he said those things didn't sound very scary. I contend that if I ran across any of those things in my living room it would be terrifying.
