I do the same thing - explore morbid topics in my head as a part of a story line. anymommyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11317877435130121894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8654887465201994138.post-51572276591649355912013-06-29T18:04:52.600-05:002013-06-29T18:04:52.600-05:00I think overall I'm a pretty good person. But I'm aware that I'm ultimately untested since I'm not faced with difficult decisions, just normal ones that I try to approach ethically. Ethics, however, can be a philosophical luxury.

I do think a lot about how much we are held liable for our thoughts. I'm working (slowly) on a post about it, because in the ugly "cannibal cop" case I think he really was convicted for thinking unacceptable thoughts, and that's disturbing. It occurred to me that if he'd simply put his fantasies in the form a screenplay he'd have been given a pass, but because they were for private pleasure, they were wrong. I have lots of thoughts on this, and this essay just skirts the edge of it. It's what we do, in health...

And then I got to the end and you surprised me! Of course you're a good person (at least, I think so, from my impression of you through your words); but you're not only a "good" person: you're a person, and people are complex. What is "essence" anyway? You're also "bad", or something not wholly good. Sadistic? Masochistic? Doing your best with the vulnerabilities of life and love? All of that, probably, and much more. Hope you're not being too hard on yourself :)

If I'm looking forward to reading the book, knowing (something of) the tragedy that will unfold, ought I to wonder if I'm a good person as well?

Thanks for sharing, as always!Sheenanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8654887465201994138.post-6607599852140788672013-06-28T16:20:29.206-05:002013-06-28T16:20:29.206-05:00Almost There is almost here!
